Coking coal price reaches US$300/ton for the first time in 5 years

Because of the shortage of supply in Australia, the export price of coking coal in this country has reached US$300/FOB for the first time in the past five years.

According to industry insiders, the transaction price of 75,000 high-quality, low-brightness Sarajl hard coking coal on the globalCOAL-platform is US$300/ton fob, and the shipping schedule is scheduled for November. The price is US$20/ton higher than the price offered by Australian suppliers earlier this week. According to data from Metal Expert, the product has reached this level for the first time since December 2016.

The reason for the price increase is still the limited quanlity that Australian exporters owned. This year, Australia's coal exports have been strongly affected by weather conditions. According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the country's coking coal exports in July fell by 13% last month and 7% year-on-year to 12.99 million, the lowest level since February 2019.

Prices in China are also rising. Due to concerns about tight supply, the coking coal period of the Dalian Commodity Exchange's January contract has been opened for 1945 yuan/(301 US dollars/ton) to 30,495 yuan (472 US dollars/ton), setting a new high for the third time this week. Since last Friday, domestic coke prices have increased by 200 yuan/ton(31 U.S. dollars/ton), extending the effective upward momentum. According to market participants, the price of high-quality hard coking coal from the United States to China has risen by US$20/day, exceeding US$470/ton CFR. In the next two months, Shanxi, China's largest coal-producing province, will conduct major production safety inspections on all local coal mines, which has aggravated supply concerns.
